Rail Operators

There are various Amtrak services in Virginia:

  • long-distance: between the Northeast Corridor and Florida or the Carolinas, and also the Cardinal between Washington and Chicago
  • regional: between the Northeast Corridor and places in Virginia, including Richmond, Newport News, Norfolk, and Roanoke

VRE

VRE (Virginia Railway Express) operates commuter rail services on two routes between northern Virginia and Washington DC.

Washington Metro routes extend significant distances into Virginia - see District of Columbia.

Norfolk

Hampton Roads Transit operates public transport in the Hampton Roads area, including Norfolk, Newport News, and Virginia Beach. The services include a light rail line, opened in 2011, and branded as The Tide.
