The Temirtau tramway, running 11 km to Qarmet owned steelworks complex, closed in February 2023 due to poor infrastructure condition, but is now undergoing a restoration, funded by the steelworks owners and the local authority.

The Temirtau tramway was to open on 1 October 2024 (City Day), with new Chinese built trams, but this has been delayed by crew training.
The 22 km Astana Light Metro is due to open in 2025.

The train ferry port in Azerbaijan moved from Baku to the new port of Alat, 70 km south, in September 2014.
The train ferry port in Kazakhstan moved from Aktau to the new port of Kuryk, 60 km south, in 2018.
