National Railway Operator

Established in 2011, Qatar Rail is responsible for the country’s rail network, which at present consists of the Doha Metro and the Lusail Tram, and also the future Long Distance Passenger and Freight Rail project.

Metro and light rail systems

  • Doha Metro: three lines, with an overall length of 76 km, and 37 stations.
  • Education City Tram; A 12 km light rail network west of Doha. The 6 km of the first two phases had opened by 17 November 2021 with the Green Line following 29 July 2023.
  • Lusail Tram: a 39 km light rail network north of Doha.

Trams

  • The Msheireb Tram, in downtown Doha, operates on a closed circuit 2 km loop with 9 stops. It opened on 30 December 2019, is owned by the Qatar Foundation and is free to use. See Tram Guide.

Recent and Future Changes

Recent Changes

The first phase, a 6 station, 6 km section of the Lusail Orange Line, opened on 1 January 2022.

The Education City Tram, Green Line, opened on 31 July 2023, completing the 12 km network.

The rest of the Lusail Orange line, with 11 more stations, opened on 8 April 2024. The first 10 stations of the Pink line also opened on 8 April 2024. The 10 stations of the Turquoise line opened on 6 January 2025.

Future Changes

The Lusail Purple Line, with 5 stations, is currently under construction.
